I just had this purple yam for lunch and fittingly so, as PURPLE is the color to proudly parade this month! Yes, the color purple becomes the focus for an exciting FOOD competition and fundraising event to benefit Women Against Abuse (WAA) happening at the end of this month!
On October 8th, Women Against Abuse (WAA), and Mayor Nutter launched iPledge, a city wide social awareness initiative and month long campaign to create awareness about domestic violence. You may have noticed that The Cira Centre has been adorned in the color purple this month? Or perhaps you spotted the purpled PECO building? Well, that’s because purple is the official color of the anti-domestic violence movement.
WAA is Philadelphia’s leading domestic violence awareness agency and Philadelphia’s only emergency shelter specifically for abused women and their children. This year, and new to the campaign, WAA finishes off the month with a BAM (as Emeril would say) with Dish It Up! This
creatively called: Dish It Up event, takes place on October 29th at Moore College of Art and Design (20th & The Parkway) from 6 to 9 PM. It will be a stirring food competition to say the least, and all of the proceeds will benefit WAA.
Ten of Philadelphia’s top-notch female Chefs/restaurant owners, will create one dish, but with the requirement that the dish must include the element of purple!
Check out this competitive line-up:
Jennifer Carroll, Chef de Cuisine, 10 Arts, current Top Chef Contestant
Sheryl Borish, Owner, Marathon Grill
Effie Bouikidis, Owner, Effie’s Greek Restaurant, Paul
Katie Cavuto Boyle, Owner/Chef, Healthy Bites
Marie Forte, Owner/Chef, Cucina Forte
Moon Krapugthong, Owner/Chef, Mango Moon/Chabaa Thai
Catherine Lee, Owner & Luciana Spurio, Chef, Le Virtú
Ane Ormaechea, Owner/Chef, Café Apamaté

The wining dish will be chosen by Kristen Welker, Weekend Anchor, NBC 10 News; Kirsten Henri, Philadelphia Editor, Grubstreet.com; Drew Lazor, of Mealticket, City Paper; and Moshay Laren, Radio Personality, 107.9 WRNB. The winner of the perfectly presented purple plate will receive the “Purple Dish Award”. Now that’s dishin’ it up for a worthy cause!
Your support would really contribute to the success in raising money for this deserving organization. Tickets are $60. Buy them here! There will be plenty of food to taste, cocktails from Chick’s Café and Wine Bar and Beer from Stoudt’s Brewing Co. and dancing too! Oh and of course, a crazy competition to keep you even more entertained! Come join-in the fun, put on a purple sweater, and support your favorite female Chef and WAA! See you there!
For some reason I don’t think my plain ol’ purple yam would win the competition, but I’m going to see if I can get a sneak peek as to what our Chef’s will be dishin’ up for the contest….stay tuned!
