A few weeks ago I tweeted about the Il Piaggione 2005 Chianti Classico Riserva. A steel of a wine that I found at the 19th & Chestnut St PLCB store for only $13.99. It worked wonders in my slow simmered homemade lamb ragu. A recipe that was inspired by theone I found on page 22 of the Oct 31, 2009 Wine Spectator Issue. You can still find this wine in most of the State stores around here. The store at 1218 Chestnut St still has a big stock of them.
Here are my tasting notes on this lovely bargain wine:
The lovely tart sour cherries you get with a good Chianti are followed by that rustic worn, leather, horse saddle smell with a hint of fennel and oregano. High in acidity but that was tamed down with a bite of my homemade lamb ragu which I served over pasta ribbons from Severino. I like to drink the same wine that I’m using to cook with, when it’s this good. This wine has a firm tannin structure but not overly hard. The cherries linger nicely and settle over the back palate with a lingering of fennel sweetness. Seriously at $13.99 this is a great house wine to have around the house for fall entertaining!
